Among the animal print rugs, the zebra rug is easily the most popular. The simplicity of the black and white pattern complements almost any decor, be it wild life themed, contemporary or classic. The contrast of the base colors black and white offers a kind of perplexing yet catchy sight in any kind of room. There are many sellers who stock zebra rugs, but it is important to know what a zebra rug actually is. While it may seem that any rug with black and white pattern akin to a zebra can be passed off under the title of ‘zebra’, that is not the case. Only the rugs made of real zebra hide can be called so, any artificial one should be titled ‘faux zebra’.
Natural or real zebra hides are basically of three types, depending on what species of zebra they are sourced from. The Terminal zebra has the most number of stripes on the body (80 stripes). Mountain zebra has about 50, whereas Burchelli zebra, which is the most commonly found zebra, has only 25 of them. Also, zebra stripes are not actually white and black – they can be dark brown and cream and so forth. Thus natural rugs made from zebra hides will not always have a good contrast between the dark and the light stripes, faux zebra rugs on the other hand can have a contrast to suit every taste, from dull to extreme black and bright white.
These rugs can also be used as area rugs, although only the faux ones. An area rug is a rug made to fit a predefined area, such as a bedroom floor etc. For instance, if a room measures 9′x12′, any 9×12 area rugs can be bought to cover the entire floor and give it a uniform look. These can be used to cover a limited area of floor also and can even be framed and hung on a wall. Jute and wool are the fabrics that are commonly used in making zebra area rugs. While wool area rugs offer comfort to walk on, the jute variant provides durability as it can be washed normally.
A zebra rug can lift the ambiance of a room to another level altogether. Although natural ones look fantastic, they are a little expensive and not very easy to find. The faux zebra rugs are quite economical and can be tailored to suit individual tastes. Combinations like espresso black and ivory white can be obtained in the jute and woolen rugs. Choose a rug carefully keeping in mind the budget and also aesthetics. The rug is sure to impart joy to every eye.
